Biography

Moithu Thiruvathra is one of the master performers in Arabanamuttu today. He is having hundreds of disciples all over the state. He trains the students for school youth festivals as well as other professional performances. He is one of the notable disciples of Backer Edakkazhiyur, the pioneer of this art form. He hails from Thiruvathra, Malappuram district. He is having hundreds of disciples and performing all over India for years. He is also teaching Arabanamuttu in ‘Moinkutty Vaidyar Memorial Academy’ in Kondotty, Malappuram

Moithu Thiruvathra is very popular in state school youth festival circuit. As a disciple of legendary Backer Edakkazhiyur, he promises a lot to this art form. Several recognized him as a popular Arabanamuttu artist.

Arabana

The instrument Arabana is normally made out of leather which pasted on a half meter round wooden frame. Each part of this instrument will deliver different types of sounds. The importance of Arabana is the variety of sounds it produce.The frame of this instrument is made out of different root of woods like ‘Chempaka’, ‘Ayini’, ‘Pilavu’ etc. The skin of animals like goat, buffalo are used for making this instrument. Usually 8 to 10 persons participate in Arabana Mutttu. The Arabana muttu has two styles, the ritualistic Ratib muttu and Kalimuttu, which is recreational.
