‘Arabanamuttu’ is a folk art with a proper mixture of dance and music. The name of the performance was derived from the musical drum which is named ‘Arabana’. Arabana is a musical instrument which was used by the Arabs for their dance forms and folk songs. This drum was played during the wartimes as an announcement and also used for informing the isolated people who lost their ways in the desert. In Kerala, this art form was evolved during the ‘Bhakthi movement’ and used to perform in the society where epidemics like ‘Vasoori’ was existed. It is believed that by playing the Arabana, the vermes of Vasoori will sent out of the borders and will protect the people from this disease.
