In 2010, Mudiyettu, the dance drama performance ritual tradition of Kerala was inscribed in the representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Kizhakke Vaaranattu Mudiyettu Sangham was founded to preserve, develop and further propagate this ritual tradition. ‘The Invocation’ is an intuitive manual created to disseminate this precious tradition to the common people without losing its essence and its worth by this group, as prescribed by UNESCO as well as the central Sangeet Natak Akademi. The most significant element of Mudiyettu is the invocation of Goddess Kaali. The notion behind this is the invocation of good to demolish the evil, just like there is an invocation in any art form. Mudiyettu consists of the appearance of several characters; Narada, Dharikan and Kooli are also invoked in addition to Kaali in this art form. Through this scheme of ‘The Invocation’, the Vaaranattu group members as well as their head and the eldest member of the Varanattu family, ie. myself, are dedicated sincerely to popularize and globalize Mudiyettu.
